I bought a new laptop. It has Windows 10.

Getting Microsoft Money to run on it the way I wanted took a few tweaks. I’m documenting them here in case someone else also wants to do the same thing. Microsoft Money is a software program on Windows for tracking your accounts, similar to Quicken. Microsoft stopped selling it in 2011. They made the last version a free download for everyone (see and ).
Even if you never used Microsoft Money before, you can still start using it now, and it’s all free. Other than not being able to automatically download transactions and securities prices, the software still works.
I had no problem in installing it or running it on Windows 10. The new generation online and mobile account tracking applications such as Mint or Personal Capital are easier to use but desktop applications such as Microsoft Money or Quicken still have their advantages in some ways. PocketSense With some initial input from me, a third-party developer Robert developed ways to download transactions and stock and fund prices and update them in Microsoft Money. Because Robert did a much better job than my initial primitive attempt, I now use Robert’s system called. The setup is well documented on the PocketSense website. This takes care of updating the stock and fund prices, and downloading transactions from banks and brokers that still support direct downloads in Money’s OFX file format. Import Quicken Download However, many banks and brokers now stopped offering direct downloads in Money’s OFX file format.
Because Quicken is still around, most of them still offer downloads from their websites in the Quicken Web Connect format. If you just save the downloaded file and you change the file’s extension from.qfx to.ofx, you can import the transactions into Money by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you want to skip the manual steps of saving the file and changing the file extension, you will have to do a few tweaks to make the computer open the.qfx file directly as if it’s a.ofx file. After these tweaks the download will go directly from your browser into Microsoft Money.
Add.qfx Extension First you have to make the computer understand the.qfx extension. You need to add a few registry entries.
There is a registry file in on Ameridan’s Microsoft Money Offline Weblog, but running it didn’t make it work for me. Following the manual edits in the worked. If you log in as an administrator account only to install software and you log in as a regular account for routine use, make sure you do the registry edits in both accounts.
Associate.qfx With Money Import Handler There’s one more registry change before it all works. In RegEdit, find the key HKEYCLASSESROOT Applications mnyimprt.exe. Delete the NoOpenWith entry. This makes the Money Import Hander appear in the Open With list and you won’t get the error “The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another program.” Now download a transaction file in Quicken Web Connect format and save it somewhere. Right click on it and select Open With.
Navigate to Program Files (x86) Money Plus MnyCoreFiles (hidden folder, just type it in) and choose mnyimprt.exe. Check the box to always open this type of file with this program. It takes some work up front but after you are all done, you can just download transactions from the websites of your banks and brokers in the Quicken Web Connect format.
The download will go directly into Microsoft Money. Say No To Management Fees If an advisor is charging you a percentage of your assets, you are paying 5-10x too much. Learn how to find an independent advisor, pay for advice, and only the advice. I had to replace the hard drive on my laptop. I’m running Windows 10 Pro, and have been using Microsoft Money for years (without the online features Microsoft stopped using years ago). I’ve installed Money again using my original CD, but when I attempt to open my Money file, it tells me I’m using the wrong password (which is not true). When I attempt to download and install the Sunset version, I get a message: “The requested operation requires elevation” and it doesn’t install.
Can you give me any help?
I have been using Quicken 2005 since it came out. I am upgrading my computer from a desktop running XT to a laptop running Windows 10.
I understand there are potential problems if I upgrade to Quicken 2016 or 2017 and try to use my Quicken 2005 files. I will be getting the new laptop in mid February, therefore I have some time to prepare for the transition. Is there anything I should do in the meantime? Should I just stick with Quicken 2005?
I don't use the online functions. I use it for recording transactions and budgeting my personal finances. I am in Canada, currently running Quicken 2005. The major thing I would do is to make sure my current data file is as good as possible:.
Make a copy of your data file. Use Quicken (File File Operations Copy.), to make a copy of your data file. Quicken will do some file cleanup whereas the Windows copy will make a bit-by-bit copy. Validate the copy of the data file you just made: File File Operations Validate and Repair.
Make sure you check the Validate file checkbox. Delete unneeded memorized payees.
Delete unused and clean-up your categories. Delete unused saved reports. Make sure all downloading of accounts has been deactivated (including any hidden accounts). Remove/delete all reminders. Depending on your situation, you may want to start this process now but you should do this as the last steps before installing your new software.
Did a great job of things you might do to convert, but I thought I would address this question 'Should I just stick with Quicken 2005?' The real question is 'Will Quicken 2005 stick with you?' When you have no need with any of the new features the real question comes down to, 'Will this version continue to work as I'm forced to use newer operating systems?' And frankly that isn't a straightforward answer.
It isn't like Quicken Inc goes back and tests all the old versions with the new OSes to make sure they work. And there also seems to be somewhat of luck, because for some people they don't seem be able to get them installed. And in general one thing that tends to fail before anything else is printing. And the help tends to not work too. I can't remember if I could install Quicken 2005 (this would be the US version) on Windows 10.
I have installed a few old versions at one time or another. I know one of them around that time frame failed, but I don't remember, which it was.
If remember thinking how strange it was because the year earlier did install. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions so far. My new Windows 10 computer is here, so it is time to upgrade my Quicken. Can I download Quicken 2013 as an intermediate version on my new computer, without installing my old Quicken 2005?
Then copy my Quicken 2005 files from my old computer. Then covert the 2005 files to 2013 files. Then buy and download Quicken 2016 and covert the files to 2016.
Or shold I do things in a different order? Thanks, Larry Currently running Quicken 2005 on an XT computer. Planning to run Quicken 2016 on a Windows 10 computer. Living in Canada. 'but it still went to the paper requesting the key and did not accept it.'
Well I guess it didn't work with your version of Quicken. What the Quicken.ini file holds is the license. With my copy of Quicken 2005 US bought at a store there isn't a 'key' to put in. There is just the license, which would have been activated by contacting a server, which doesn't exist any more.
For 'locked installs/CDs' where there you have to enter a key, you are out of luck. The server it would contact to verify that key, no longer exists.
